The Rahula Statue

Rahula—one of the most formidable Dharma Protectors in Tibetan Buddhism—is the all-seeing, all-knowing guardian who subdues obstacles, planetary forces, karmic disturbances, and breaches of sacred commitments. With his wrathful eyes, serpent body, and fearsome form, Rahula protects the very heart of Dharma practice and ensures that virtue prevails over deception, confusion, and harmful intent.

In the Jonang tradition, Rahula is revered as an exceptionally powerful protector. His activity is so intense that practitioners in the Dzamthang region say he appears as fire and smoke trailing behind great monks and lamas, especially following extraordinary masters such as H.H. Jigme Dorje Rinpoche, one of the most accomplished Jonang practitioners of this era. His presence is unmistakable—fierce, swift, and devoted entirely to protecting the purity of the Dharma.

This consecrated brass Rahula statue carries the energy of this profound protector lineage, filled with rare relics, sacred substances, and blessed Kalachakra sand, and empowered within the retinue of Red Vaiśravaṇa Holding the Spear during an empowerment ceremony led by Shar Khentrul Jamphel Lodrö Rinpoche.

A Protector So Powerful That Rinpoche Has Held Back the Empowerment

Khentrul Rinpoche has repeatedly emphasized that Rahula is not a protector to approach casually. Due to Rahula’s immense, volatile power and his uncompromising activity toward samaya and ethical integrity, Rinpoche has not yet bestowed the full empowerment upon Dzokden students.

In 2019, in California, Rinpoche gave only a reading transmission (lung) for Rahula—giving students a taste of the connection—but then advised:

“You are not yet ready for the full power of this Dharma protector.”

This makes this consecrated statue extraordinarily precious.
It serves as a support for creating the necessary conditions for one day receiving the full teachings and empowerment of Rahula in the Dzokden community.

To prepare properly, great care was taken:

  • rolling protector mantras for the fillings

  • rare relics of lineage masters and sacred sites relic pills

  • blessed sands from Kalachakra rituals

Only a very small number were filled and consecrated with the aspiration that they help students ripen karmically and spiritually to meet Rahula’s teachings in the future.

The Motivation for Creating These Statues

A protector without proper fillings, relics, and empowerment is like a weapon without a warrior—symbolic, but not functional. This is why we always consecrate the statues at Dzokden.

This Rahula statue was created with the profound motivation:

1. To offer an authentic support for overcoming obstacles and protecting Dharma practice.

Rahula eliminates inner and outer hindrances, stabilizes fortune and health, subdues harmful planetary forces, and fortifies practitioners on the path.

2. To create the conditions for Dzokden practitioners to one day receive the full Rahula empowerment.

Owning and practicing with this statue is an offering of motivation, faith, and aspiration to deepen connection to this fierce protector. We have kept 1 at Tashi Gadu on the Dharma protector area to continue to make these aspirations we will one day have the merit to receive these teachings.

Relics, Substances & Empowerment

Each Rahula statue contains:

  • Sacred relics of realized lineage masters

  • Holy substances from important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, lineage lamas and a variety of relics

  • Blessed Kalachakra sand from empowerments and pujas

  • Rahula mantras, seed syllables, and dhāraṇīs

After filling, the statue received:

Red Vaiśravaṇa Empowerment (California, 2025)

Rahula was invoked as a member of Red Vaiśravaṇa’s retinue, receiving powerful empowerments for fortune, protection, and obstacle removal.

Drolmi Kazug (21 Taras) Puja

Purifying karmic hindrances and strengthening protective force. These empowerments animate the statue as an authentic protective presence.
