Red Dzambhala Sungkhor (Protection Amulet)

This traditional Tibetan Buddhist Red Dzambhala sungkhor (Tib. srung 'khor, "protection wheel") is a sacred protection amulet traditionally prepared and blessed by Tibetan lamas at Tashi Chöthang Monastery, the principal monastery of Khentrul Rinpoche's root guru, Lama Lobsang Trinley.

Within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, a sungkhor is far more than a symbolic ornament. Sacred mantras, prayers, and protective diagrams are carefully folded according to traditional methods, wrapped, and consecrated through ritual practice to invoke the enlightened blessings of the deity. Worn close to the body or respectfully carried, these amulets serve as continual supports for Dharma practitioners, reminding them to rely upon the Buddha, cultivate generosity and virtue, and maintain an unbroken connection with enlightened qualities.

Red Dzambhala — The Magnetizing Wealth Deity

Red Dzambhala is one of the Five Dzambhalas, the enlightened wealth deities of Vajrayana Buddhism. While all five forms help remove the suffering of poverty and scarcity, Red Dzambhala embodies the Buddha's magnetizing activity—the enlightened power that attracts the favorable conditions needed for both spiritual and worldly accomplishment.

Associated with the fire element, Red Dzambhala is traditionally invoked to magnetize prosperity, harmonious relationships, beneficial opportunities, long life, merit, and the resources necessary to accomplish virtuous activities. In the Vajrayana tradition, wealth is understood not as an end in itself but as a means to support Dharma practice, generosity, the care of one's family, and the benefit of others.

Throughout Tibet and the Himalayan Buddhist world, practitioners make offerings, recite Red Dzambhala's mantra, and rely upon his blessings to remove obstacles created by poverty and miserliness while increasing the causes of abundance through generosity, ethical conduct, and merit.

Magnetizing Auspicious Circumstances

The magnetizing activity of Red Dzambhala extends beyond material wealth alone. Traditionally, practitioners pray to him for the conditions that allow their aspirations to flourish—whether attracting supportive teachers, beneficial friendships, harmonious family life, successful Dharma activities, or the resources needed to benefit others.

For this reason, Red Dzambhala sungkhors have long been carried by Tibetan practitioners as sacred supports during important undertakings, business activities, travel, major life transitions, and periods when they wish to strengthen positive conditions and remove obstacles to success.

A Sacred Support for Practice

This blessed amulet is not regarded as a talisman that functions independently through superstition. Rather, it is a sacred support that strengthens one's connection with Red Dzambhala through faith, refuge, generosity, mantra recitation, and Dharma practice.

In Tibetan Buddhism, genuine prosperity begins with cultivating merit and generosity. When carried respectfully and combined with virtuous conduct, this sungkhor serves as a continual reminder that true abundance arises through compassionate activity, ethical living, and the accumulation of positive causes and conditions.

Care and Respect

To avoid damage to the sungkhor, it is recommended to keep it in a cloth or leather pouch. This also protects it from dust and moisture. The amulet may be worn around the neck, across the body, or respectfully carried in a bag. It may also be placed on a clean shrine or another respectful location within the home.

As with all sacred Buddhist objects, it should be kept clean and treated with respect. Avoid placing it directly on the floor or in unclean locations.

Traditional Recitation

It is traditional to recite the Dependent Origination Mantra three times before wearing or respectfully handling the amulet:

Om Ye Dharma Hetu Prabhava
Hetun Teshan Tathagato Hyavadat
Teshan Tsa Yo Nirodha
Evam Vadi Mahashramanah Soha

Many practioners then recite the mantra of Red Dzambhala to activate it.
